Firefox to Block Ads?

  • January 25, 2011 2:47 pm

Want to opt-out of advertising based on your browsing habits?  Firefox will soon offer an opt-out for targeted ads delivered to you based on how you surf.
"To put it in layman’s terms, this will let you configure your Firefox browser, having it inform both websites and advertisers that they would prefer to remain private and opt-out of any advertising based on their behavior. This is made possible thanks to a new “Do Not Track HTTP header” which will accompany every click or page view in Firefox." [via ubergizmo]

Good news, right?  What are your thoughts?  Do you think that Mozilla, the company behind FireFox, will suffer by cutting a revenue stream?  Let us know in the comments.

Business On The Run

  • September 28, 2010 5:57 pm

Is your business a business on the run?  Keep up on your smartphone or mobile device.

(1) Equip field customer support and repairmen with phones having good-resolution cameras — When repair personnel are on site at a customer, they snap a close-up photo of a broken part and immediately send it back to the home office to verify the correct part number, and check to see if it’s stock or available locally. This is a technique I learned from my HVAC repair company, which does this to avoid delays in ordering parts, and unnecessary running around to source and install parts.

(2) Have before and after photos, or photos detailing unusual services on your phone – This is a technique I learned from Davey Tree Expert Company. When the Davey arborist recommended a drastic root pruning technique for an ailing tree we own, he was able to show photos of this procedure on his iPhone.  It was an unusual procedure that was hard to grasp without seeing it.  The photos convinced us — immediately, on the spot.

(3) Track packages – A variety of apps now make it possible to conveniently track packages being delivered.  So if your customer wants to know where that shipment is and you’re out of the office, it is now an easy matter to check on it from your phone.

(4) Create, view and edit Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents on handheld devices – Apps such as Docs to Go and Zoho Mobile make this possible.  This way, your field people can deliver or change documents (such as proposals and contracts) or the fly.  Or they can check stock lists or other data maintained in spreadsheets.  More about document apps here.

(5) Fill in forms, sign and return documents from your mobile device – No more printing and faxing documents! Use a convenient iPhone app to fill in forms, add a digital signature and send them to the other party, without needing to print them out and fax them back.  Zosh is one; RightSignature is another variation.

(6) Put QR Codes on items to give your customers more information — QR codes are 2-dimensional codes that you can create and print on documents such as marketing materials and even business cards.  Then using a QR scanner app on a handheld phone, the customer can get more information directly on their handheld device (perhaps taking them directly to a Web page).  You might use QR codes to provide more product details or even coupons and discounts. More information on using QR codes.

(7) Load catalogs or images of  product models on your smart phone – Why carry catalogs if good resolution images and other information can be available on your smart phone instead?  You can even email selected information to the customer to print out locally on their printer, on the spot.

(8) Track inventory with Blackberry or other smart phone devices — Using a combination of an inventory software application, and a barcode scanner app or add-on for your mobile device, you can scan and/or check inventory on site or while mobile.  NEOReader is a universal scanner app which claims to be able to scan and read all kinds of barcodes.  There’s also a barcode scanner for Android by XZing.

(9) Deliver sales brochures and customer information – Email marketing materials to print off right at  customer’s place of business or home

(10) Give presentations on an iPad - If you have a sales presentation and you’re with one or two people, there’s no need to lug around a laptop and projector.  Just get a stand for your iPad and present your materials off of that.  For larger audiences you may need that projector, but the iPad is quite nice for small groups and lends an informal intimacy that aids the sales process.

Customer Generated Advertising

  • April 12, 2010 5:40 pm

Dr. Morenings

Foursquare, the location based, social networking game, has an extraordinary side-benefit for small business: consumer generated advertising.

This is just reconstituted term for mouth advertising, seasoned for wider appeal. Not simply an experience that is shared, but an experience that is broadcasted. The SocialMediaExaminer has an excellent article detailing the angles of Foursquare and how users actually do the advertising for local businesses. Check it out here.

5 Tips For Real Estate Agents With Blackberrys

  • April 5, 2010 6:52 am

If you carry a Blackberry, then Tips for Blackberry Users is a blog that you should bookmark or add to your RSS reader.  Below is list of 5 tips for Real Estate Agents, but they are tips anybody on the go can really benefit from.  This list was adapted from a post on Tips for Blackberry Users:

1.  Make sure ALL your email addresses are in your BlackBerry. If you are like me, I have 2-3 different email addresses. Make sure you have all of them being received from your BlackBerry. This way which ever email address Mr. Important tries to contact you on – you can get to.

2. If you are in a meeting and you put your phone on vibrate, make it a habit to check your phone after each meeting to assure you have not missed an important call.

3.  Have your key contacts (numbers and emails)  in your Address Book. For example: Lenders, Closing agents, Title Agents, Appraiser, Survey Companies, etc.  Anyone with whom you might need to call while you are away  from your office.

TIP: Consider scanning their business cards – there are some great applications that will do this for you.  A HUGE time saver.

4. Have important documents on you phone. The Documents on the Go application allows you to edit and create documents. This comes in handy if you need to alter a document and send it back.

TIP: Consider an application that lets you send any documents to your BlackBerry from your PC. There is even an application that will let you remotely print documents from your BlackBerry.

5.  Set up a Profile IMPORTANT PEOPLE that will notify you even if you have your phone on vibrate. This will allow this call to NEVER be missed. Anytime you are actively working with an important client, change their profile to the IMPORTANT PEOPLE profile and never miss their call again.

Realtors using mobile technology for remote entry and more

Realtors are using mobile technology for remote entry and more thanks to Schlage . They are quickly adapting and adopting tools that run on their mobile devices.  Remote entry and home automation is the latest example.

Schlage is a company that deals with home automation, security, and monitoring products that can be controlled via cellphone or weblink.   How often, I wonder, has a Realtor been late to an appointment or an open house and left their client on the front porch waiting?  I’ve been that client several times waiting for a Realtor to show up for an appointment. It would’ve been nice to have the house opened and ready for me but the Realtor had the key.

With Schlage’s technology a signal from the Realtor’s phone could have opened the door, turned on the lights, and had the stereo playing some light jazz; all from a cellphone.  Schlage even has an iphone and Blackberry app that can stream a video feed.  The Realtor can follow their clients around a house and answer questions from their phone or from their computer via webcams.  LINK, one of Schlage’s products, makes a brief appearance in a recent iphone commercial.  See that below:

The video below is from last year’s CES in Las Vegas.  The original video can be found here, at crackberry.com and highlights the integration of their products with mobile platforms.  You can also click here for a product demo directly from the Schlage website.

Our mobile phones are increasingly becoming integrated, equally, into our businesses; a tool for home and office. It’s like a construction worker who uses his hammer all day then comes home and uses it to remodel the basement.   Schage is another company that is making products that make this true.  Realtors on the cutting edge will take notice of these various innovations and incorporate them. Good luck!

Little City Roller Girls

Little City Roller Girls

Yep, that just happened.  You just clicked on a link that said  Little City Roller Girls.  And here is how I found out about them; the big three.

lcrg facebook site lcrg twitter sitelcrg youtube siteMaybe, you were thinking back, as I was,  to the dawning age of cable television that was defined by this type of variety.  I remember when we first got cable as a youngster and feeling like I was drinking from a fire hose; there were so many options.  One of those that caught my impressionable eye was Roller Derby.

I couldn’t believe what I was seeing!  I never knew that such a sport existed but here it was.  Long after being enamored by more cerebral entertainment; GI Joe, Thunder Cats, wrestling, I still have a soft spot for a good 4 wheeled kick to the chin.

Adolescence, then Adulthood, caught up with me and I was distracted by responsibility.  Some might consider what you are about to see as a stumble in that progression, but I say it’s an advancement!   It’s a giant step up from the days of watching it on the tube; this is LIVE!  Plus, this is going on in my backyard, right here in the TriCities!!  ROLL ON Roller Grlzzzz!

This is from idav, aka David Cate’s YouTube channel.  David is a local media personality and blogger for gotricities.com, the Phillip Morris like conglomerate of media outlets here in the Tri-Cities.  Ok, maybe, not that big, but the interweaving connections throughout the area is just as intricate.

Local Bristol Gourmet Market Imbibing Social Media

  • February 28, 2010 4:57 pm
Inari Wines in Bristol, Virgina has a very informative and visually compelling website, so why do they need a Facebook site?  Why do they need a Twitter site?

Inari Wines needs a social presence on these sites for the same reason that most businesses do:   To build customer loyalty, to monitor what people are saying about their brand, and to market their product to an ever widening customer base.

But this is little ole’ Bristol, not a booming metropolis, right?  Inari Wines is located in Bristol but it has also made its home on Facebook.

Bristol may not be booming, but Facebook is.  And so are all the others Social Networks; Twitter, Linkedin, YouTube, Google Buzz, and the list can go on.  Inairi Wines doesn’t have a store front on Hollywood Boulevard nor do they a have one in SoHo.  They don’t need one.  According to the stats, they could potentially reach more people through Facebook.

Could they do more?  Could they take advantage of more social sites?  Could they monetize their efforts?  Yes.  …..theParaMobile.com can help.

This dude is going shopping!

  • February 23, 2010 12:39 am
They sure are thrifty.  And they can stretch a dollar paper thin.  They have an eye for style, guys, that we sink or swim by.  Our woman can sure shop, can't they?  They practice more than we do, right?  Woman are the hunters/gathers in their roles as men are in theirs.  But watch out, ladies, this dude is going shopping.

Men passionately love their gadgets as much as they passionately hate to shop but a marriage of the two might just have them bumping elbows with the ladies at the register,…..fighting for your product.

MixMobi is a company that creates coupons for distribution across mobile phone platforms.  Surprisingly, MixMobi has reasonable pricing plans.  This means, that with MixMobi, you can create a graphically appealing coupon for your product and then distribute it via sms, Twitter, Facebook, IM, email and many other mobile applications.

I'm a lazy fellow.  I buy whatever I need based solely on the ease of acquisition and irregardless of price.  Let me tell ya, boys, I'm actually excited about shopping now.  Men, will this effect how you buy your toys?  Ladies,…….do you want to shoot me in the face for posting this?  Check our Mashable's review for an in-depth review.

Local TriCities Youth Camp’s Fund Raiser goes Viral

  • February 16, 2010 11:41 pm

Many of you here in the Tri-Cities area of East Tennessee have grown up going to Appalachian Christian Camp.  Many of you, though no longer able too attend as campers, still actively support the camp as volunteers, board members, counselors, program directors, financial supporters and through your daily prayers.  And still others of you enjoy the benefits of the camp through the different camp sessions that your kids enjoy throughout the summer.

Appalachian Christian Camp relies on the generosity of individuals and commitments from local churches for support.
